The yacare is a species of caiman that is native to South America. This medium sized crocodilian grows to an average size of 6-8ft. The diet of a yacare consists primarily of fish, crustaceans, mollusks and snails. The average lifespan is around 50-60 years and they breed rather quickly making them more resilient. The name yacare is derived from the portuguese word Ja’care also spelled (ya’care) which is a regional term for alligator.
